PowerBrickATOM - A New Mobile Solution
By: Garrett Schnitzler

A Canadian leader in rugged mobile computing has released a new product said to assist in industrial automation. Acura Embedded Systems of Surrey BC has just launched the PowerBrick Atom, the newest model in its line of mobile computing solutions. The Atom is an improvement on the former PowerBrick IC and has improved processing power, RAM, and hard drive space. The main addition to the features of the PowerBrick ATOM is added wireless and GPS capability. "We wanted to give the IC unit a boost in performance and also add Wi-Fi and GPS," said Preet Thind CEO of Acura Embedded, "we continually want to make our products better to meet or exceed the needs of our industrial customers by manufacturing only state-of-the-art products." The PowerBrick ATOM is powered by the award winning Intel Atom N270 microprocessor which is designed for compact applications.

The PowerBrick ATOM also boasts standard connections as well as a DIN rail mounting system that allows for efficient mounting in a variety of places. Also available on the PowerBrick ATOM is an optional SATA flash disk. "Depending on the needs of our customers," mentions Thind "we can create different solutions for each individual customer whether they need wireless capabilities, GPS, extra memory, or a certain type of monitor."

To supplement this product, Acura Embedded Systems provides backlit touch screen LCD and LED monitors that range in brightness depending on the working conditions. "For outdoor applications or elsewhere the level of ambient light is relatively high we recommend the rugged AcuBrite LED Series monitor as it is very bright," Says Cameron Fuller VP of Marketing and Sales for the company "however, for low light conditions we recommend one of our economic AcuTouch Series LCD screens."

The industrial automation sector is one of Acura Embedded Systems key markets in North America and the PowerBrick ATOM is specifically designed for that industry. The PowerBrick ATOM is currently available from Acura Embedded Systems. For more information visit acuraembedded.com.

AcuConnect - A New Cellular Modem
By: Garrett Schnitzler

A Canadian technology company has developed a new product that promises to change the way mobile data communication is used in North America. The AcuConnect is a small, rugged mobile cellular Wi-Fi router that is designed to provide the user with internet connectivity and a portable network wherever they go. This is made possible by a PCMCIA or USB slot on the device that allows the user to plug in their data card of choice for instant connectivity. The company that has created this product is in Surrey, BC based Acura Embedded Systems, a manufacturer of rugged mobile computers since 1994.

"This product is something that we have been working on for a while and we believe that it will allow our clients maximum freedom and mobility," said Cameron Fuller, VP of Sales and Marketing for the company. "Many of our clients are in the emergency services sector and the AcuConnect not only allows them access to the internet but also to create a mobile Wi-Fi network for their different units when on a scene."

The AcuConnect is also a resource saver, as it cuts down on the long term costs associated with purchasing modems from service providers. "For example, let's say that your service provider upgrades from a 3G network to a 4G network," explains Fuller, "You then have to upgrade your modem which could cost up to $700. On the other hand, the AcuConnect allows you to plug in any PCMCIA, USB or Express card so when your ISP upgrades to 4G all you have to do is pick up a new card." Acura has also used compression technology that enables 20 to 25 users to be connected to the network with no slowdown. This means that multiple users can be connected for the cost of one subscription to a data plan without performance suffering. "Another of the applications that we have in mind for this product is in the oil industry," mentioned Fuller.

Another of the unique features of the AcuConnect is that it has its own integrated operating system that does all the connectivity management automatically. This feature reduces the amount of resources used by any connected computers. "This feature is very important to our customers as they need the computer resources for other important functions such as computer aided dispatch or mapping," said Preet Thind, CEO of Acura.

The AcuConnect is currently available from Acura. For more details on the AcuConnect and other products visit www.acuraembedded.com or call Acura toll free at 1-866-502-9666.
